The Algarve interior sat largely undisturbed by the coastal tourism boom until the late 1990s, when converted farmland and forestry tracks became accessible to visitors seeking terrain beyond the beach.
Paderne's limestone hills, cork oak plantations, and carob groves now host a network of designated trails maintained by licensed operators under regional land-use agreements with the Câmara Municipal de Albufeira. The routes cross elevations between 80 and 240 metres, offering sightlines toward Guia, Ferreiras, and the Barrocal belt.

Riders navigate gradients up to 18 percent, cross seasonal stream beds dry from June through October, and pause at viewpoints overlooking the Serra de Monchique to the west.
